I chose to read Chapter 2, “The Art of Summarizing” because I often find it difficult to introduce and smoothly work a source into my writing. This chapter gave me tips on how to summarize a source without sounding bias, all while making it relevant to my essay. It also gave better ways to explain their opinion without using openings such as “they believe” or “they said”. Its better to use phrases such as “They advocated for…” or “They argued against…”

While Yo-Yo Ma has a slightly different view of art and science being integrated, I agree with many of his points. In his essay, “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education”, Ma makes very agreeable points regarding art, empathy, and its relevance to society. Ma argues that “Empathy comes when you understand something deeply through arts and literature and can thus make unexpected connections.”

Yo-Yo Ma is a strong advocate for integrating art and science to reach a greater level of human of capacity. While I have a slightly different view on how (and why) the arts and sciences should be merged, I agree with many of his main points.
