Free Write: What role does natural beauty play in our society?

I frequently enjoy looking at scenes in nature and seeing how naturally beautiful things are. I wouldn’t consider it a hobby but I am always taking pictures of things around me that I find unique and beautiful. I always feel the need to take pictures of colorful and vibrant scenes I find in nature, whether it is the trees in the fall, a field of flowers, or a bright sunset. Specifically, the view of the sunset over the Saco river always captures my attention. There are many beautiful places on campus to view it from. The third floor of the Ripich Commons is the place I usually watch the sunset from. It is relaxing to have the beautiful view while I eat dinner. It is as though the Commons was built specifically for that view. It has large glass windows and much of the seating is arranged so you can eat while facing the water. The Commons building itself is very beautifully designed and it is positioned perfectly so it is easy to enjoy the view of the natural beauty over the Saco. Because of this specific view and UNE being surrounded by various forms of beauty, it makes the campus a very relaxing and welcoming place to be. The scenery makes it a much more peaceful place compared to a school that is located in the middle of a city. The school itself is great, but the location of the campus played a role in my decision to attend here. When I visited the school, I instantly felt at home and calmed by the mix of waterfront and the tree line. The nature around the school adds such a positive vibe and draws in many incoming students. Taking a walk by the water or through the woods is often a natural stress reliever for me. When I have many assignments to complete and begin to feel overwhelmed, I find it beneficial to take a break and visit the nature a few steps outside of my dorm room. Living with three people in a small dorm room can make me or anyone feel a little trapped or crowded, but living so close to such great scenery is a great thing. Being able to take a walk outside and enjoy the beauty of nature is always relaxing and is almost like an escape from the college life.

I also find beauty in helping out with the students at Biddeford Primary School and Kennebunk Elementary School. I find the minds of young children to be so fascinating. I enjoy trying to understand the way they think and how their minds work. At Biddeford Primary, I often work with the school psychologist so I can become familiar in that field. We usually observe a student during class time to look for symptoms of a specific disorder or learning disability. I also observe the psychologist while she evaluates students before coming to a diagnosis. I find beauty in understanding the complexity of children and their differences. When a child’s problems or deficiencies are finally explained and a solution can be reached, I find it beautiful.

  1. Your free write does a good job visiting sources of beauty. How do you think these relate to the possibilities Armstrong presents in his essay?
