After looking at various sources, I believe science is an important tool in society. In Mark Boslough’s essay, “We Must Protect U.S. Investment in Scientific Knowledge”, he argues that science is vital to the modern way of living and that it should be better funded by the government. Boslough stated, “It [science] has swollen with the advances we associate with modern living, with medical discoveries that have given us longer, healthier, happier lives, and with unsurpassed national security.”  With this quote, Boslough was trying to convey the great significance science plays in our society. As we advance and make more scientific discoveries, mankind grows healthier and becomes more resistant to threats to our survival. While supporting science and new discoveries, Jonah Lehrer discusses this topic in a different way than Boslough. In Lehrer’s essay “To Answer Our Most Fundamental Questions, Science Needs To Find a Place for the Arts”, he approaches science as a more challenging topic. Lehrer says “Modern physics knows so much about the universe, but there is still so much it doesn’t understand. For the first time, some scientists are openly wondering if we, in fact, are incapable of figuring out the cosmos.” Although Lehrer didn’t necessarily go against the idea of science, he proposed the theory that we can never truly know everything about the world. I believe that both of these quotes are true, but they depict different perspectives of the science controversy. While natural phenomenons may be too complex for science to ever explain, science helps cure the human race from illnesses and make as thrive.

  1. This was an interesting combination of quotes. Continue to make those connections count! What happens when you place a quote celebrating science’s advancements with a quote that belittles that very thing? You don’t end up with a bit of a snarl that you could spend a lot more time smoothing out than you do. I love that you get to this important intersection of ideas. Look at all that we have accomplished via the scientific method! Look at all that we have discovered! + Look at all we’ve yet to discover! What if we can’t figure it out using the scientific method?!

Can you think of ways to slow down and more thoroughly explore this dilemma?
